Comet Moth
These are amongst the world’s largest silk moths.
Males have a wing span of 12-20cm and long reddish-yellow tails. They spin and twirl their tails as it flies, interfering with bat echolocation, luring the bat to attack the tails rather than the moth itself.
Comet moths cannot feed! They do have a mouth and gut, just not functional. They live on the energy stored from what they consumed while they were caterpillars.
The males use their antenna to catch molecules from the females pheromones, they are thought to be able to locate females from miles away!
Featuring dried hydrangeas, roses, white statice, selenite shards and mookaite jasper shards.
All species are ethically sourced by trusted supplier with the appropriate permits.
Shadow box frame 20x20cm
