Whip Scorpion/Whip Spider

phryna grossetaitai

You may recognize these creatures from Harry Potter!

Native to Peru, these lives in caves. Though they have 8 legs, only 6 are used for walking. The front pair of legs are modified for use as antennae-like feelers, with many fine segments giving the appearance of a ‘whip'. When a suitable prey is located with the antenniform legs, the Whip Scorpion seizes its victim with large spines on the grasping pedipalps, impaling and immobilizing the prey.

The Phryna grossetaitai is Not a true spider or scorpion, but rather a close relative commonly known as a whip spider or tailless whip scorpion. While they share the same class (Arachnida) as spiders, they belong to their own unique order called Amblypygi.
